Resident FAQs
Stepping Stone is for Working Women. What if I don't have a job?
Each resident is given up to 30 days to find employment or other regular activity (education or volunteer work), provided she has the ability to keep her fees current. Job seeking skills and assistance are provided on a referral basis at no charge to our residents.
Who are the women who come to Stepping Stone?
While the specific mix of life roles varies, typical residents have included students, office and sales managers, nurses and other health care professionals, teachers, a mortgage broker, an attorney, a hotel receptionist, and volunteer workers.
Are all of your programs in-house?
No. Residents are expected to attend a meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous every day. AA meetings are held at Stepping Stone two days a week; residents are expected to attend AA meetings on their own on other days.
Can I come to Stepping Stone if I do not have a problem with alcohol?
No. While we deal with drug as well as alcohol problems, Stepping Stone is primarily an alcohol treatment program. If you have a problem with alcohol or want to stop drinking Š whether or not you have problems with other drugs Š you are welcome at Stepping Stone.
Can I bring my children?
Unfortunately, Stepping Stone does not have space or facilities for children. Women with children need to make other arrangements for their childrenÕs care during their stay at Stepping Stone. Visits with children can be arranged on a case-by-case basis.
What does 'zero tolerance' mean?
Stepping Stone is a clean, warm, and safe home. Alcohol and illicit drug use are not tolerated. Random UA tests are conducted. When a resident is found to have used drugs or alcohol, she is immediately dismissed from the program.
Is your program effective?
Stepping Stone offers a warm, safe and comfortable environment in which residents can learn to work and live in sobriety. Peer support and the commitment to the program of living taught in the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous have given hundreds of women long term sobriety.
Each woman has the choice to use the tools available to her.
What forms of payment do you accept?
Residents may pay their fees by check or money order made payable to STEPPING STONE. Visa and MasterCard are accepted with a 3% convenience fee. Cash is also accepted.
Do I need money for anything other than my fees?
Yes. You need money for personal items, bus fare, laundry, and pay phone. You also need cash for contributions at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings during the practice of AAÕs 7th Tradition, which states that "we are self supporting through our own contributions." A typical contribution is $1 to $2 per meeting.
Do I need a car?
No. Stepping Stone is located within a block or two of four major MUNI lines. Parking is at a premium in the neighborhood, so cars are not recommended.
